Cinderella’s Shoes “Made in Spain”

Arriving in cinemas in late March is Cinderella, a live action feature film directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden, and Helena Bonham-Carter. In anticipation of the release, the Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries (Federación de Industrias del Calzado Español, “FICE”) has collaborated with The Walt Disney Company Spain &Portugal to present an exhibition entitled Cinderella’s Shoes, featuring twelve Spanish proposals from exclusive designers to adorn the feet of the fairy tale heroine.

“At Disney, we believe Spain has a powerful footwear industry and we thought it would be a nice tribute to ask some of the most representative brands to reinterpret one of the most iconic shoes in cinema history,” explains a representative from the largest media and entertainment company in the world. Footwear and film join forces in an exhibit that is on display from 27 February to 8 March at the Museo ABC in Madrid. Admission is free.

A favourite among international celebrities and actresses like Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Katherine Heigl, Pretty Ballerinas offers a flat model that matches the design of the pump by Úrsula Mascaró, both in transparent vinyl and nude patent leather. The contribution of Hispanitas, a firm present in over 50 countries, evokes the reflections of the Aurora Borealis with shimmering vinyl, a glitter sole and Swarovski rhinestones. Lola Cruz opts for a shoe for a unique evening, made of grey suede and ‘degradée’ stones. Magrit captures the moment in which the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand touches Cinderella’s feet to sculpt the glass slippers. Designed with a 21st century Cinderella in mind, Munich uses the concept of ‘bling-bling’ sneakers. Nacho Rivera, whose artistry spans the six inhabited continents, is inspired by the transformation of the pumpkin into a majestic carriage, contrasting aged napa leather with sky-blue satin, gold and crystals. Pedro Miralles crafts a statuesque design with a ‘cut out’ silhouette at the ankle and a cone heel. With rhinestones on the toe and natural feathers on the heel, Ras hints at the purity and freedom of the Disney character. Rebeca Sanver, in collaboration with jeweller Chus Burés, plays with methacrylate and Swarovski crystals with the meticulousness of a goldsmith. Inspired by Cinderella’s castle, Sara Navarro conceives of a buttoned platform pump with a methacrylate heel and a base of pearl tulle, incrusted with rhinestones and a powder-blue grosgrain bow. Wonders wants to see Cinderella dance the night away in dancing shoes with a translucent glitter-injected and jewelled buckle.

Twelve designs with which Cinderella can rewrite her story and leave behind any other accessory during her midnight flight, but never her shoes…
