The Port of Tarragona increases its traffic by almost 13% in the first half of the year

The port facility moved 16.29 million tonnes from January to June and recorded the best two quarters in recent years in movement of petroleum products. The movement of grain and flour as well as vehicles also stand out.

The Port of Tarragona continues to strengthen its traffic with a major movement of goods, both loading and unloading, and during the first half of the year it moved a total of 16.29 million tonnes, 12.9% more than in the same period last year.

Bulk liquids (crude oil, petroleum products and derivatives) are the ones to experience the most significant growth (19.9%), reaching 11.04 million tonnes moved during the two quarters. This is the best first half of the year, hitherto recorded, in movement of petroleum products (diesel, fuel oil and other derivatives) with 5.7 million tonnes.

Also from January to June, the port terminals handled 11.6 million tonnes of energy products (coal, petroleum products, derivatives and chemical products), 16.6% more than in the same period last year. It is worth noting the good performance of diesel (928.0%), petrol (25.3%), crude oil (15.0%) and other petroleum products (40.5%).

As for the movement of chemical products, during these six months the Port of Tarragona moved 1.13 million tonnes, an increase of 1.4% compared to the first half of last year. The main destination countries of these chemicals loaded at the Port of Tarragona are the United States, the Netherlands and the Bahamas.

Also, the Port of Tarragona is the leading port in the State in terms of traffic of food products. Up to June, the port handled 2.1 million tonnes of food products, exceeding the same period last year by 14.7% . Likewise, during the first six months of the year, the movement of grain and flour recorded an increase of 36.9% (337,366 tonnes), and feed and fodder rose 2.6%.

During this June vehicular traffic recorded exponential growth compared to June 2014. The specialized terminal of the Port of Tarragona transported 10,510 vehicles, up 97% on the same month last year. The movement of vehicles at the port continues its upward trend driven by both imports and exports. It is worth highlighting that more vehicles have already been moved in the first half of the year – 61,328 units – than in all of 2014 – 59,829 units.
